Is a workflow engine the same as an AI agent platform?

A workflow engine and an AI agent platform are related, but they are not the same. A workflow engine focuses on running and coordinating steps. An AI agent platform needs additional capabilities around agent runtime behavior, tool access, identity, policy, state, observability, and production deployment. For example, an agent may need to call MCP tools, communicate with other agents, maintain session state, and prove what happened during a run. Diagrid avoids positioning Catalyst as only a workflow engine; the stronger framing is a platform for making AI agents and MCP servers durable, secure, and governable in production.
