Restate Comparison

Does Catalyst provide built-in state encryption or audit logging like Restate's virtual objects?

Catalyst does not have built-in state encryption within the durable execution runtime; encryption depends on the configured Dapr state store (e.g., encryption-at-rest in Azure CosmosDB). For audit logging, Catalyst leverages Dapr's observability with OpenTelemetry, but there's no native state-specific audit trail. Restate's virtual objects include automatic state journaling and replay, providing inherent auditability for state changes. If you need state-level encryption and audit without extra configuration, Restate is simpler. Catalyst gives you flexibility to implement these via your chosen state store.
